Patient Services Asst

The incumbent serves as Patient Services Assistant to the UCC Supervisor and Medical Director and provides support to the UCC staff. The incumbent often acts as the initial point of contact for individuals making inquiries over the phone. Primary duties include (but are not limited to):
- Receives and relays incoming and outgoing telephone messages; - Coordinates patient referrals and transfers from the VA Medical Center to VA treatment facilities and other local facilities; - Assists patients, visitors, and others requesting information, guidance or referral for special assistance; - Receives and directs patients and visitors, answers routine inquiries and makes appropriate referral of questions concerning patient's condition; - Independently performs involved or complicated support tasks; - Performs clerical work in support of the care and treatment given to patients; - Uses software to report patient movements, and request records or test results; - Assists patients and/or physicians in contacting volunteer or social services as needed; - Assists nursing staff in the UCC by preparing rooms for patients, escorting patients to other departments, answering telephones, taking specimens to lab; - Acts as primary timekeeper for UCC; - Maintains various unit files, forms and publications; - Takes inventory and requisitions office supplies; - Other administrative duties as needed. Experience:
One year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-4 level in federal service is required. Specialized experience is experience that has equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSA's) to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the position to be filled. Examples of specialized experience include:
maintaining patient files; performing administrative and clerical duties in an office setting utilizing office automation equipment and software programs such as word processing, databases, spreadsheets, and graphics; experience working with Veterans and clinical staff. OR Education:

Physical Requirements:
Typically, the employee sits comfortably to do much of the work. However, the incumbent is frequently called upon to assist patients, escort patients via wheelchair or stretcher, notify nurses of patient arrivals, obtain information from patients in rooms, direct patients and visitors, etc. Situations may arise requiring the incumbent to lift objects (up to 20 pounds) such as suitcases, clothing, or paper-based medical data. When assisting the direct care staff in the department, the incumbent is required to assist patients in wheelchairs, to bend to clean patient rooms, to assist with one-to-one coverage of Behavioral Health patients, and to walk specimens to the lab. The fraudster will send a check to the victim who has accepted a job. The check can be for multiple reasons such as signing bonus, supplies, etc. The victim will be instructed to deposit the check and use the money for any of these reasons and then instructed to send the remaining funds to the fraudster. The check will bounce and the victim is left responsible.
